The Importance of Routine Dental Exams and Cleanings

Regular dental exams and cleanings are vital to maintaining not only a healthy smile but also your overall well-being. Even with excellent at-home care, it’s important to see your dentist regularly. Routine visits help detect early signs of tooth decay, gum disease, or even underlying medical conditions you may not be aware of.

What Is a Routine Dental Exam?

A routine dental exam allows your dentist to thoroughly evaluate your oral health. Using digital x-rays, your dentist can identify issues like cavities or bone loss that may not be visible during a standard visual check. After reviewing the x-rays, a full examination of your teeth and bite is performed to detect plaque, tartar buildup, and potential cavities.

The dentist will also assess the health of your gums by measuring the spaces between your teeth and gums. Shallow pockets are normal, but deeper pockets may indicate gum disease. Additionally, a full soft tissue exam is conducted—checking your head, neck, throat, tongue, and face for signs of swelling, redness, or conditions like oral cancer or autoimmune disorders.

If concerns are found, your dentist may recommend improved home care or schedule follow-up visits for treatment.

What Happens During a Dental Cleaning?

A dental cleaning, typically performed by a hygienist, is crucial for removing tartar that brushing and flossing can’t eliminate. During this visit, specialized tools are used to clean your teeth thoroughly. You may also receive a fluoride treatment, sealants for children, or stain removal services.

If signs of gum disease are present, your dentist might recommend a deep cleaning—called scaling and root planing—which removes tartar from both the tooth surfaces and deep gum pockets. This often requires multiple visits for optimal results.

How Often Should You Visit the Dentist?

Most people benefit from dental exams and cleanings every six months. However, if you have a history of gum disease, excessive plaque buildup, or other concerns, your dentist may recommend more frequent visits—sometimes up to four times per year.

Why Regular Dental Visits Matter

Routine dental care helps prevent serious problems before they start. Early detection of cavities, gum disease, and oral cancer allows for easier, more effective treatment. Your mouth can also reveal signs of systemic conditions such as diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, or Sjögren’s syndrome—making regular checkups essential for your overall health.

I've been going to Anna for my cleanings for years. She is the best dental technician and gentle with me. I never liked going to the dentist before going to AAC, but the people there are wonderful.

Saw Dr. Tambor as a new patient. The office got me in quickly. Everyone is friendly and welcoming from the moment you walk in. Dr. Tambor explained everything, was super patient with my dental anxiety, and did a great job. Have a dental implant in now thanks to this office and look forward to correcting the rest of my smile and getting back to as normal as possible. Appreciate all of the help, thank you!

Wonderful experience with one of the younger doctors there. I was having pains for months and had to have a filing replaced. He was very professional, friendly, and proficient and made sure I was comfortable. Pain is now gone. Would recommend for sure.

Great experience with knowledgeable and friendly staff! Anna did my cleaning with a gentle touch and left me teeth sparkling ✨. I saw Dr. Mann and her dental assistant Lea, they were both amazing and comforted me, as they knew I was a bit nervous. Dr. Mann made conservative recommendations for my
dental care and took care of everything I needed. I had a filling without numbing and still felt no pain, amazing. I won’t be going anywhere else. Thank you Dr. Mann, Lea and Anna!
